If you’ve ever seen a lush “jungle tank” and heard “I barely do water changes,” that’s often the Walstad-style logic showing up.

The idea is not “water changes are evil.” The idea is: build a system that does not constantly require emergency dilution to stay stable.

The core reason: plants take nutrients out of the water path

In heavily planted systems, plants can uptake nitrogen compounds — including ammonium — and turn them into growth. Walstad’s own work emphasises that many aquatic plants preferentially take up ammonium and may do so directly from the water through leaves, meaning plants can play a real role in “water purification” in planted aquaria.

This is also why big plant mass often equals fewer “mystery algae outbreaks”: algae and plants are both primary producers, and both respond to nutrient availability. Overabundant nutrients in water bodies fuel algae growth (that is basic eutrophication logic), so controlling nutrient availability matters.

Soil helps, but it must stay functional

A soil underlayer can support plant nutrition, and Walstad notes that soil can be especially helpful in a new tank, providing nutrients and supporting biological establishment.

But she also warns that if soil becomes severely anaerobic, it can kill plant roots and drive cloudy water through dissolved organics stimulating bacterial growth. In that context, she frames water changes as a “band-aid” if the underlying substrate oxygen problem is not fixed.

That’s a big lesson: low‑maintenance tanks are not “maintenance-free”; they are “stable by design.”

So do Walstad tanks never need water changes?

In the real world, most keepers still do occasional water changes, because water changes can remove accumulated dissolved organics, reset certain imbalances, and keep things feeling fresh.

But if your plant mass is high and your feeding is sensible, your nitrate rise may be slower, and your tank may not demand frequent large water changes just to keep nitrogen under control. That’s the point.

The simplest “Walstad-style” maintenance mindset

Export nutrients on purpose: trimming plants is literally nutrient export.

Keep feeding reasonable: too much food is too much nutrient input.

Watch the substrate: if roots are struggling, it’s a warning sign.
