Short version: your tank is not a sealed jar. But it is a semi‑closed nutrient system, which means nutrient “drift” happens unless you actively manage inputs and outputs.

Fish food is the big one. Food is literally nutrients entering the system.

Tap water can add minerals and sometimes nutrients, depending on local water.

Soil and substrates can release nutrients (especially early).

Fertilisers add nutrients intentionally.

Plant trimming is export. When you remove plant mass, you remove nitrogen and phosphorus stored in tissue.

Water changes export dissolved substances, including nitrate and dissolved organics.

Some nitrogen can be exported biologically through denitrification under suitable low-oxygen conditions, converting nitrate through steps to nitrogen gas.

Why nitrate tends to accumulate in many tanks

Nitrification converts ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. If your tank runs strongly aerobic (which most do), nitrification is very reliable. Denitrification requires low oxygen conditions, so it may be limited to certain substrate micro‑zones or specialised setups.

That’s why planted tanks often lean on plant uptake and trimming as a major nitrogen export route, especially in low-tech approaches.

The substrate: long-term helper and long-term risk

Over time, substrates accumulate mulm (fine organic particles), which increases oxygen demand in the substrate.

Because oxygen penetration can be very shallow in sediments, deeper areas can tip more anaerobic if organic loading is high.

In anaerobic sediments, sulfate reduction to hydrogen sulfide is a common process, and those sulfides can be re‑oxidised when oxygen returns. Balanced systems manage these gradients; overwhelmed systems get root damage and water clarity issues.

The long-term planted tank checklist (the calm version)

Control nutrient input (don’t overfeed long-term).

Export on purpose (trim plants, remove dead leaves).

Keep plant mass healthy; plants are part of your filtration.

Use water changes as a tool, not a confession.
